Excess Catamarans, built with the strength of Groupe Beneteau, have taken the cruising catamaran by storm since the brand’s debut in 2018. These sporty cruisers rank among the top new vessels in their class, a niche of comfortable cruising catamarans that refuse to compromise on sailing sensations. The Excess Team works with famous naval architects such as VPLP Design, Marc Lombard, and more to achieve the goal of an ultimate balance of live-aboard comfort and an exhilarating helm.
Each model holds true to this goal with a sleek, single-level design with steering on the same level as the cockpit. The replacement of a flybridge with dual aft helms allows for reduced windage, a low center of gravity, and a maximized sail area.
The helm station design also addresses two of flybridge catamaran sailors’ top concerns, 1) the feeling of being removed from the crew and 2) having zero rudder feedback in the wheel due to the hydraulic systems necessary for flybridge steering.
On the wheel of the Excess 14, in contrast, you have a complete connection to both the crew (all on the same level as you) and the sea (via lightweight, Dyneema steering cables). The lines of sight are preferred by many thanks to the ability to see all crew (especially boat dogs and young children) as well as the sails and any upcoming markers. The option to switch back and forth between helms is tremendously helpful when navigating, docking, or picking up mooring balls.
The Murray Yacht Sales Team has been a supporter of the Excess brand since this concept was first formulated around survey feedback from catamaran charterers and owners.
